How To Tie The Trilene Knot

The Trilene Knot is an easy-to-tie, consistent and reliable knot used to attach a fishing line directly to a hook, lure or swivel. This is not my favorite knot for tying braided lines or stiff monofilaments, but it provides a good low cost alternative when attached with thinner diameter line. This is not a good knot to use when attaching a leader wire. A better choice for this would be the Improved Clinch or Double UN Knots, though the Trilene is a more popular alternative.

This knot is fairly easy to learn through a little practice and patience. It does not slip under pressure and will hold well even on thin line sizes. To tie this knot, use the following steps:

1. Pass tag end through eye of hook or lure 3x. Thread line through the eye so it comes out on top of itself. Pull 12 inches or more depending on how much you want to turn back over the knot after final tuck is made. Two tight turns is usually a good place to start.

2. Double line back and run tag end through loop for a second time. Pull both loops away from the eye of the hook before tightening down.

3. Make 5 turns around standing line, working from bottom to top as shown, then tuck tag end under all turns as you pull tight. 4. Clip tag end leaving about 1/8 inch protruding from knot. Trim excess, but not too close.

Here are two views of the finished knot:

Attach hook or lure to fishing line as described above and tighten down the knot by pulling on both ends. When properly tied and tightened, there should be a bite taken out of the line just below the knot. If you bounce the knot on your fingernail, it will produce a metallic ring if done properly.
