How to Catch Redfish?

Since I first started fishing, redfish have always been one of my favorite species to stalk and catch.  I remember the first time that I caught a red- which was an accident at best; I had no idea what the heck it was.  Since then, they've become one of my most prized species to catch on light tackle.

Now redfish are not the most challenging fish to catch on light tackle.  They can be caught by spinning gear, baitcasters, and fly fishing if you choose the right fly.  The reason they are so fun is because of their tendency to give you a run for your money even when using ultra light equipment.  Redfish can be found all over the south from Texas to Florida and as far north as Virginia.  They are a super popular species that catch on bucktails, plugs, spooks, top water poppers, jerkbaits, and fly fishing nymphs.    It's amazing how these torpedo shaped fish can create such a ruckus- even when caught on ultra light gear.

This article will go over some of the best techniques to catch redfish, different baits you should be throwing, and where to find them.  So grab your rod and reel, choose your weapon of choice, and lets catch a red.

What is a Redfish?

Redfish are one of the many species that fall under the 'jack' family, hence their name- jack crevalle.  If you've ever been fishing in the south you're sure to have seen them cruising around with their dorsal fin sky high looking for some food.  Redfish are usually dark brown or purplish, but can also be some variation of blue or green.  The most obvious characteristic that distinguishes reds from other jacks is their tail- which has a soft top and hard middle section, making it look like they have two tails.  You won't find many fish in the ocean with a tail like this.

Redfish are also one of the most common species to be caught in estuaries, bays, flats, and ponds.  They can live in saltwater or freshwater which doesn't bother them at all.  You may even catch reds out in the open ocean.  But if you want to catch the most and the biggest redfish, make sure to hit up an estuary or bay.  They can be found in both brackish and saltwater areas though.
