The Best Bait For Snook

The best bait for snook is any kind of live or dead bait fish. There's a little more to it than that but we'll start with the basics.

According to Lee Adams in his book, "Salt Water Fishing," there are five species of fishing lures and baits: artificial lures and baits, surface lures and baits, subsurface lures and baits, natural lures and baits, and dead baits. He says that dead baits are the most productive of all fishing lures or baits. And as a photograph from his book shows, his first choice for dead bait is a live snook fishing!

In this article we won't go into a lot of depth about fishing lures and baits or snook biology. We'll talk more about that in later articles. What we will do is give you a few ideas to get you started as far as bait goes.

First, if the water is clear enough for you to see bottom, make sure your live or dead bait fish is the appropriate size for the snook you are after. You can also fish dead shrimp, squid or cut bait.

Second, don't be a wimp when it comes to live or dead baiting! There's a common misconception that fishing with live bait will damage the fishery. This may have been true in areas where over fishing has reduced the numbers of snook, but it is not true where snook are plentiful.

Third, don't be afraid to experiment! If you're fishing with live or dead baits and aren't getting bit, try something different - cast net some mullet, mangrove snapper or ladyfish, remove the guts because they will spoil quickly, and fish with them.

As always, good luck and good fishing!
