How To Tie A Palomar Knot
A palomar knot may be used for attaching a fishing line to a hook, lure, swivel or other terminal tackle. To tie the knot take an appropriate length of line and make a small loop near the end as shown in figure 1.
Figure 1 - Small Loop For A Palomar Knot
Pass tag end through eye from front to back and return forming a second small loop (figure 2).
Figure 2 - Second Small Loop For A Palomar Knot
Pass end of line through the first loop and tighten by pulling both tag end and main line (figure 3). Hold the second loop with your forefinger and take care that it does not slip during tightening. When the knot is tight, trim end and melt using a match or lighter.

The finished knot (figure 4) should be covered with blood or bait to camouflage it and prevent premature detection by fish. Knot will not slip under normal conditions but if necessary the knot can be made more secure by passing a loop of the tag end around the standing line a second time before tightening.
Figure 4 - Finished Palomar Knot
This knot is most effective when used with monofilament or other limp fishing lines. It is not recommended for use with wire leader material, since it doesn't offer enough support and tends to "saw" through the line.
An improved version of the palomar knot is made by adding a hook snell to the basic knot. To tie this version, follow instructions for tying a regular Palomar knot but thread loop through eye first and then back over main line before tightening. The end result will be similar to figure 5 below (snelled Palomar knot).
